Hirunika Sentenced to 3 Years of Rigorous Imprisonment
The Colombo High Court (HC) today (28) sentenced former Member of Parliament Hirunika Premachandra to 3 years imprisonment for kidnapping.
This follows her conviction on 18 charges related to the case.
In December 2016, police filed a complaint in the Colombo Magistrate's Court (MC) against a group, including Hirunika Premachandra, for abducting a young man named Amila Priyankara using their Land Rover Defender (registration number 62-1859) in the Dematagoda area.
During the proceedings, Deputy Solicitor General Janaka Bandara, noted that eight supporters of Premachandra had previously received suspended prison sentences and fines for their roles in the abduction incident.
President’s Counsel Anura Maddegoda, representing Hirunika Premachandra, informed the Court of her intention to appeal the decision.
Premachandra, had been accused of orchestrating the abduction, assault, and illegal detention of Amila Priyanka Amarasinghe, an employee at a Dematagoda shop. Amarasinghe testified that the abduction occurred after a relationship developed with a woman named ‘Chamila Geethani,’ who frequented the shop.
In 2017, seven of Premachandra’s associates pleaded guilty to their involvement in the incident, while Premachandra herself did not plead guilty to any charges brought against her.
