Four New High Courts to be established under anti-corruption national action plan

The government has decided to establish four high courts in Colombo 7 with immediate effect.

In line with the Anti-Corruption National Action Plan (2025–2029), the government has identified the urgent need to establish several new High Court premises to strengthen the implementation of justice-related activities under the Ministry of Justice and National Integration.

Four new high courts in order to tackle the current backlog of cases in order to expedite them, Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said Tuesday. These new high courts would be set up in state bungalows that are to be vacated by former presidents after the government stripped them of their privileges last month. We all know the number of cases that are being currently heard on past corruption and other abuses. The proceedings have been delayed due to infrastructure limitations, Herath told reporters here.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Governments to transfer four buildings currently under his Ministry to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration for the immediate establishment of four new High Courts.

The buildings to be handed over are located at the following addresses in Colombo 07:

  • No. B 88, Gregory Road
  • No. C 76, Bauddhaloka Mawatha
  • No. B 108, Wijerama Road
  • No. B 12, Stanmore Crescent

This initiative aims to enhance the judicial infrastructure required to strengthen anti-corruption efforts and ensure the efficient delivery of justice in keeping with the government’s broader national policy framework.
