China suspends 3 airlines including Sri Lankan over covid fears

The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has temporarily suspended flights from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Philippines and Sri Lanka starting from 17 August after several passengers arriving from these countries tested positive for COVID-19.

Six passengers tested positive on an Etihad Airways' EY862 flight on Aug. 3, while there were six positive cases on a China Eastern Airlines' MU212 flight on Aug. 5, and there were 23 positive cases on a SriLankan Airlines' UL866 flight on Aug. 7, according to a statement posted on Wednesday on the website of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

CAAC has suspended Etihad Airways flights from Abu Dhabi to Shanghai, as well as the China Eastern Airlines flights from Manila to Shanghai for a week, starting Monday.

CAAC has also suspended the SriLankan Airlines flights from Colombo to Shanghai for a period of four weeks starting Monday.

The suspension of Etihad Airways and China Eastern Airlines' flights will last for one week, starting on Aug. 17, while flights of SriLankan Airlines will be suspended for four weeks.

The Chinese Civil Aviation authorities announced that passengers heading to China will be required to provide test results proving that they are free of COVID-19 before boarding their flights.

The CAAC also said that the airlines are not allowed to transfer the original quota for EY862, MU212, and UL866 to other routes.
