Cyclonic storm ‘BUREVI’  moving away from Sri Lanka without heavy damage

The cyclonic storm ‘BUREVI’ is gradually moving away from the country, the Department of Meteorology stated.

The centre of the cyclonic storm has crossed north-eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Kuchchaveli and Thiriyayi between 10.30 pm and 11.30 pm yesterday (December 02). This cyclonic storm, with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting up to 90 kmph, is very likely to move west-northwestward, emerge into Gulf of Mannar by noon today.

The Burevi is now headed towards southern India, authorities said on Thursday, after it slammed Sri Lanka’s east coast earlier this week but caused little damage.

No critical damage has been caused to respective areas due to Burevi cyclone, which entered Eastern Coast last night, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.

DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili told the media that showery condition was still prevailing in some areas in the Eastern and Northern Provinces.

“We expected more damages after hitting of the cyclone, but fortunately we had minimum damages that were not harmful to people and properties”, Kodippii said.

However more than 4000 people from North and Trincomalee have been affected due to the effect of cyclonic storm Burevi, which entered Sri Lanka last night, Minister of Irrigation and State Minister of Disaster Management Chamal Rajapakse informed Parliament today.

 “The effect of cyclonic storm Burevi is less than expected,” he said.
