State Minister Lohan Ratwatte resigns

State Minister of Prison Management, Lohan Ratwatta has resigned from his portfolio a short while ago. He has sent his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

A statement issued by the President’s Media Division said that the parliamentarian has accepted responsibility for the incidents involving him at the Welikada and Anuradhapura prisons premises and decided to resign from his post as State Minister of Prison Management & Prisoners’ Rehabilitation. He has informed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa of this decision and the President has accepted his resignation, the PMD said.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had earlier today informed State Minister of Prison Management, Lohan Ratwatta, to step down from his portfolio immediately, pending further investigations into allegations that he threatened prisoners at the Anuradhapura Prison on Sunday.

The Prime Minister has called for a full scale investigation into the allegations against Ratwatta and has asked him to step down immediately.

Sajith Premadasa, Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has condemned the recent alleged behaviour of Lohan Ratwatte and has called upon President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the immediate removal of the Minister.

Lohan Ratwatte, State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners’ rehabilitation, had allegedly entered the Anuradhapura Prison Complex illegally under the influence of Alcohol and had threatened political prisoners at gunpoint last Sunday (12).

Furthermore, Premadasa went on to state that the behaviour was “disgusting and unlawful,” and added that the act amply exemplifies the anarchial situation that exists in the country.
