Sydney Black Lives Matter rally organisers win last-minute appeal to overturn ban and rallies held across Australia
A last-ditch attempt to lawfully authorise a Black Lives Matter protest in Sydney's city has been successful in the Supreme Court.
The NSW Court of Appeal decision means protesters who attend will be immune from prosecution for breaching public health orders.
The Supreme Court yesterday ruled the protest was not authorised.
An urgent appeal was lodged in the NSW Court of Appeal this morning, which was granted deeming the assembly authorised.
Organisers challenged the decision, saying there were significant flaws amounting to a jurisdictional error.
Thousands have taken to the streets in Australia's capital cities for rallies supporting Black Lives Matter and calling for change in systemic racism towards Indigenous people.
Up to 10,000 people were expected to attend the gathering at Town Hall on Saturday
